Dermabrasion, the Ideal Therapy for Stretch Marks and Acne Scars

Acne or chickenpox scars, rejuvenation, skin discoloration, stretch marks, are just some of the problems for which dermabrasion is the ideal solution. In fact, despite being a less-invasive skin treatment than cosmetic surgery, it is able to remove the superficial layer of the skin, eliminating all types of imperfections.

Introduced for the first time in 1953 by the New York dermatologist AbnerKurtin, dermabrasion is a particular technique of aesthetic medicine now widely used and highly effective, provided it is performed with care by an expert doctor. The duration of the operation may vary according to the extent of the area, face or body, to be treated. However, normally, the process takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Immediately after the treatment, the skin generates a typical "point bleeding", a sign that the abrasion took place at a superficial level and did not reach the too deep layers of the skin. Furthermore, after dermabrasion, the patient may experience a slight burning sensation, tension, and/or itching, in practice it is a sensation similar to that of a burn with redness and swelling, which however improves until disappearing within a week.

It stimulates the production of elastic fibers and collagen

The re-epithelialization (repair of the "wound") instead usually occurs within 7-10 days. “Dermabrasion is a practice that stimulates elastic fibers and collagen, local microcirculation and improves the appearance of the skin. It is performed with many small needles, of which only the tips are used. It is a highly requested method as it is effective in the treatment of stretch marks, acne scars, skin spots, as a global anti-aging tool, rejuvenation, and elimination of facial fine lines. Its effectiveness is enhanced by the use, in synergy, and during the same session, of active ingredients which are thus conveyed more deeply into the dermis. In this way, we are able to treat the signs of skin aging but also photo and chrono-aging spots”.

Although dermabrasion is considered safe and generally well-tolerated, in some cases it is not recommended or even contraindicated. For example, in people with very dark complexions, we tend to discourage this type of technique, as these individuals are at greater risk of undergoing hypopigmentation, due to the destruction of melanocytes during treatment. Furthermore, it is also contraindicated in patients who have suffered burns in the area to be treated and in subjects who recurrently suffer from herpes infections.

Effective technique against stretch marks

In conclusion, I highly recommend dermabrasion treatment in Utah as it represents a multipurpose and widely versatile method, both for the face and for the body. For minor retouching, on the other hand, microdermabrasion can be used, an alternative treatment with which only the most superficial layers of the epidermis are removed and healing ends in 24-48h.
